Spiritual eyesight

My son Calvin totaled the car, but it happened in a most marvelous way. I had phoned him from the Philadelphia Art Museum to say I would be late for dinner. He asked if he could drive Aimee somewhere. I said yes, but after we hung up I was gripped with fear. I immediately prayed for my kids' safety.

An hour later I was at a restaurant with my brother visiting from Florida. Again I felt fear; again I prayed. And then the cell rang and it was Calvin telling me he had just had an accident. I have lately been asking the Lord for spiritual eyes, and I am pleased that I did not dither long in doubt over why my son crashed even as I was praying for him. I went straight to the belief that if I had not prayed, he and his three friends might well have been killed.

That evening I learned more of the details: As they were getting into the car, Thaddeus had said, "Yo, Calvin, how come you never wear your seatbelt?" And Calvin had replied, "Okay, girlie girly," and buckled in. And the car itself, at first heading straight for the tree, changed course by some unseen hand, and slammed it with its side.
