Justice Scalia made the remarks in a speech at a prayer breakfast sponsored by Southern Baptist-affiliated Mississippi College School of Law's Christian Legal Society. The traditionalist Roman Catholic jurist continued, "We must pray for the courage to endure the scorn of the sophisticated world."

Mr. Gumbel's executive producer, Jeff Zucker, stood by his star when confronted about the false statement: "Bryant will address it with neither a correction nor a clarification, but we will address it."
