"Marriage has been undermined by divorce, so don't tell me about marriage."

Chicago Mayor Richard Daley, denying that the issuance of marriage licenses to same-sex couples would undermine marriage. Illinois law forbids homosexual marriage, but the mayor said he would have "no problem" allowing it in his city.

"The status quo will not be preserved."

Boston Red Sox owner John Henry, telling reporters last week that he had changed his mind and now favors a salary cap for baseball. The New York Yankees' deal to obtain Alex Rodriguez, which will push the team's payroll to about $184.8 million for 25 signed players, prompted Mr. Henry's about-face (see p. 40).
