I went from making a lot of money on a sitcom to making no money.

Actress Ellen DeGeneres, complaining in the Los Angeles Times Magazine of mistreatment at the hands of ABC, which despite declining ratings had carried and hyped her show a year after she publicly announced her homosexuality. She claimed she had been treated "so disrespectfully for no other reason than I was gay." Her girlfriend, Anne Heche, has appeared in starring roles in several films since the announcement.

In all honesty, in the light of events since, it would be awfully hard to say now, 'Oh, here, let me help you out with this problem.'

Actor Tom Hanks, commenting in the New Yorker on his $10,000 donation to the Clinton legal defense fund. Mr. Hanks suggested the president's sleazy affair with Monica Lewinsky made him regret the earlier donation. A day after the remarks were reported, Mr. Hanks did an about-face: "If I was asked to do it again, I would probably give twice as much."

Criticism-real, implied, or unintended -of people for their differences is unacceptable.

Ray Bowen, president of Texas A&M University, after a player for the school's football team made a remark that angered homosexual students. Tight end Dan Campbell, at a bonfire pep rally prior to a game against the University of Texas, said he was glad to attend a school where "men like women and women like men."

Evangelicals are doing great ministry, as long as they don't try to change people.
