Paul F. Walsh, district attorney in Attleboro, Mass., on why he went to court to protect the unborn child of a mother who belongs to a sect that refuses all medical care. The mother, Rebecca Corneau, is suspected of covering up the death of her last baby. A Massachusetts judge refused Mr. Walsh's motion to jail the 8 1/2-months pregnant woman, but ordered a nurse to visit Mrs. Corneau daily in an effort to protect the unborn child. Pro-abortion legal theorists were aghast at the judge's ruling, which included naming a public-health nurse as a legal guardian for the child. The Boston Globe quoted law professor Wendy Murphy complaining that the judge's ruling recognizes the Corneau fetus as "a person with rights."
