Planned Parenthood celebrates the season

The Planned Parenthood website is festooned for the season with decorative snowflakes and the words "Choice on Earth" emblazoned across its home page. No one would dispute the organization's right to choose (no pun intended) those words, a play on the angels' declaration to the shepherds in the fields outside Bethlehem: "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men" (Luke 2:14). Endless Christmas cards show illustrations of angels accompanied by the words "Peace on Earth."

But that doesn't mean that it isn't in extremely poor taste. I mean really, twisting a phrase associated with one of Christianity's holiest celebrations-specifically a birth, no less-to promote abortion!

And just in time for last-minute Christmas shopping, Planned Parenthood is offering for sale a new line of designer condoms. Naturally the proceeds benefit the country's largest abortion provider. The line of condoms is trademarked "Proper Attire: Required for Entry" (speaking of bad taste), and is apparently aimed at women. "The fashionably chic Proper Attire design helps ensure that now you can feel completely comfortable buying condoms and carrying them with you."

Ah yes, condoms are the answer to everything!

In a recent conversation with Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse, founder of the Ruth Institute, she pointed out the familiar definition of insanity: Keep doing the same thing over and over again and expect to get a different result. As she put it, "We're already promoting contraception. When you ask someone at a crisis pregnancy center or an abortion clinic what happened, you never hear them say, 'Gosh, I didn't know where to get a condom.' Why is it that when we have birth control backed up with abortion that we have more out of wedlock pregnancy than ever before?"

To paraphrase James Carville, "It's the culture, stupid." Until we stop thinking of sex as a right, and properly associate it with marriage and procreation, society will continue to suffer the consequences of sexually transmitted diseases, unwanted pregnancies, and tragically high rates of abortion.
