Our transgendered future
You are hateful and on the wrong side of history. You just don’t know it yet. Today’s normal is tomorrow’s appalling prejudice.
Take this: Christin Scarlett Milloy wrote a startling piece at Slate.com about that point after delivery when the doctor identifies the sex of the baby, speaking as if it were a creepy, dangerous, and controversial procedure:
“It’s called infant gender assignment: When the doctor holds your child up to the harsh light of the delivery room, looks between its legs, and declares his opinion: It’s a boy or a girl, based on nothing more than a cursory assessment of your offspring’s genitals.”
The article is a rhetorical attempt to mold your thinking into the way so-called “transgender” people see the world, and to bring you to see yourself, your children, and everyone that way. Now that homosexuality has been completely normalized and the nationalization of same-sex marriage is proceeding swiftly, transgender rights and accommodations are the next cultural battlefront.
Transgender is the T in LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender). The term assumes a distinction between sex and gender. Whereas ordinarily these words are synonymous, activists for this cause claim that whereas anatomy and chromosomes determine sex, gender pertains to how one identifies and feels about oneself. So though a baby is born, for example, female, its gender—whether boy or girl—is yet to emerge or be chosen. Or so they say.
By using these terms repeatedly in this way and by appealing to the language of rights, the sanctity of choice, and the priority of personal autonomy, they will carry the day.
This will affect you. There is a logic and a pattern of cultural conquest that these causes follow. California schools have already established a legal right for students to “self-identify” as a boy or a girl and play on corresponding sports teams, giving “transgender kindergarten-through- 12th grade students … access to whichever restroom and locker room they want.”
Next, men who feel they are women will be allowed to use women’s restrooms. Then all restrooms will just become unisex. How you feel about that as a fellow restroom patron doesn’t matter. You need to get over your archaic feelings of discomfort.
Hospitals and professional associations will start disciplining doctors who announce “It’s a boy!” or “It’s a girl!”
Schools will stop registering children as either boy or girl. The system will take “gender identity” as indeterminate until teachers have explained the issue, presented all available options, and received the child’s deliberate choice. If too many children choose the gender “traditionally” associated with their physiology, the school will assume it has failed to make the options and the freedom to choose sufficiently clear. The politically favored pressure groups will accept nothing less. Progressive and conflict-averse administrators will follow this course aggressively.
Anyone who is not actively sensitive to this concern will be viewed as a public enemy, even as people are now viewed who indicate moral disagreement with homosexual behavior.
The upside could be that Christians come to see their distinct difference as Christ’s church more clearly, determine to live more circumspectly and faithfully, love their enemies more intentionally, and suffer more cheerfully. We could get more serious with that right away.
