With deer-hunting season fast approaching, Tennessee car dealer Greg "Lumpy" Lambert announced plans to offer vouchers for a bolt-action, 8 mm deer rifle with every car sold. Gun control activists denounced the planned "Second Amendment" sales campaign at Mr. Lambert's Advantage Auto Sales car lot near Knoxville. The vouchers, valued at around $100, will be voided if the holders aren't qualified to own a gun. "We are in East Tennessee," he said. "This is a sportsman's paradise." Actress Anne Heche was hospitalized after wandering up to a rural home appearing shaken and confused, hours after her breakup with Ellen DeGeneres became public. Fresno County (Calif.) Sheriff's deputies say they found her and took her to the hospital. The lesbian couple had become media darlings. Their 3-1/2-year relationship was a cause celebre for gay-rights activists. Marchers last week delivered a 55,000-signature protest petition to the Boy Scouts of America headquarters in Irving, Texas, calling on the organization to change its policy of barring homosexuals from leading Scout troops-but the Boy Scouts aren't budging. Scout spokesman Gregg Shields said homosexuality runs counter to the oath requiring Scouts to be "morally straight." The protest came a week after some Democratic delegates booed a contingent of Boy Scouts singing at the Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles. The City of Seattle is cracking down on public intoxication along the original Skid Road, inspiration for the Skid Row label applied to down-and-out urban areas. Businesses in the increasingly gentrified area initially will be asked to halt voluntarily sales of cheap malt liquor and fortified wine after midnight. Washington's State Liquor Control Board may tighten restrictions on stores, restaurants, and taverns that sell alcohol for off-premises consumption. The Colorado Rockies' Todd Helton may become the first major league baseball player to break the .400 batting average barrier since Ted Williams hit .406 in 1941. Mr. Helton, who has missed just two games this year, was batting .398 on Aug. 22, with 178 hits in 447 at-bats. John McCain sat under a surgeon's knife for five hours to remove skin cancer from his temple and upper arm. Doctors say the melanoma didn't spread and the former presidential candidate is now cancer-free.
