Mrs. X's choice

A column I wrote about a betrothed woman's wobbly attempts to trust God's goodness rather than Tom, Dick, and Harry's negative theories about marriage generated this response from a reader:

"Mrs. X in our church had three sons and her husband worked for the Township. He got fired, not because he did anything wrong, but because he refused to do wrong and it upset one of the town's movers and shakers. Also a good Christian, he became bitter. There is an old saying that if you can't do anything about your tormentors, go home and kick the dog.

"He flew into a rage and threw his wife and three sons out of the house. One lady in the church owned several rental properties and allowed Mrs. X to move into one of them. Mrs. X's family begged her to leave her husband and move back with them in the northeast. She refused. The 'godly' ladies at church all advised that she divorce the bum and move back with her folks. She ignored them.

"Instead, she got on her knees and committed her errant husband to the Lord; she took her hands off him and prayed 'whatever it takes.' Within two months, God broke him completely. He came to his wife and sons and begged their forgiveness, which they eagerly gave. Then he came before the church and begged their forgiveness, which they did, grudgingly.

"They sold the house and moved to Nebraska. Later, we moved in the other direction, but we have kept in touch all these years. I can turn around and see their Christmas card picture on my shelf. That was about 27 years ago and they are still happily married and serving the Lord."

God is faithful to his Word. But how would you prove it unless you stepped out on it?
