Although the CDC figures show a 22 percent overall decline in U.S. abortions since 2009, the agency also reported a 120 percent increase in the use of chemical “medication” abortions since 2009, performed on unborn babies of less than 10 weeks of gestation. The agency reported 619,591 abortions in 2018, but that total is a significant undercount, relying on voluntary reporting from states and excluding California, Maryland, and New Hampshire. (The figure also does not include abortions caused by abortifacients.)
