Memorial Park Presbyterian Church began as a mission congregation meeting in a schoolhouse outside Pittsburgh in 1941 and today has over 1,600 members on a 7-acre campus. It voted last summer 951-93 to leave the Presbyterian Church (USA) for the more conservative Evangelical Presbyterian Church. The PCUSA sought $1.7 million as a "settlement offer" on church property, which the congregation has paid for. Memorial's offer of $500,000 was rejected, and on Jan. 4 the church took its case to court: "It's a very sad day," said senior pastor D. Dean Weaver. "There's no euphoria or joy from us in doing this."
