Tone off

I was disturbed by the tone of your article on Promise Keepers, "What went wrong?" (March 21). In my opinion Promise Keepers was portrayed not unlike they might be portrayed by the secular news media. I am continually reminded of God's words to Isaiah, "As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts." What may seem like financial ruin, or poor policy decisions, might in God's eyes be considered complete and total obedience and dependence on him. What looks like "quick growth, then trouble" might just be the next step of faith for men who are sold out to God. I am confident that God is using Bill McCartney and Promise Keepers today to ignite a fire in the souls of men for Christ, just as God has used PK over the last several years. - Kevin Noble, Midland, Mich.

Finished the job

After reading your article, I was reminded of something that someone on stage said at my first PK rally four years ago. The idea was that PK might only be around long enough to draw attention to the need for men to have encouraging relationships with other men, including men of other races and denominations. Perhaps the mission of this organization is complete. If so, "To God be the glory, great things he has done." If not true, I look forward to whatever lies ahead. - Leland Stewart, Chattanooga, Tenn.

Strength to resist

I have followed Dr. Graham's ministry from the early 1950s and have viewed the telecasts of his crusades. In those days he did not excuse sexual sin and misconduct on the basis of being strong, vigorous, and young or because of one's attractiveness to the opposite sex ("Go and sin some more," March 21). He talked about giving our heart to Jesus and receiving his strength to protect us in time of temptation. - Jack E. Smith, Cherryville, N.C.

Graham and Goldwater

I couldn't help comparing Billy Graham with Barry Goldwater. As these men get on in years, they forget the vision that made them great and trade it all for pottage. In Billy's case, a kind word and recognition by the president. In Barry's case, one last chance to bask in the liberal media limelight. Shame, shame, shame. - W. C. Schade, Prescott, Ariz.

Too evolved to gag

Darwin's disciples would probably claim the collective yawn of the electorate over the depravity in the White House is the result of Homo sapiens Americanus evolving beyond the gag reflex. The Old Testament prophet, Jeremiah, spoke of an identical morality, fossilized at the level of the lowest primate. "I have seen something horrible: They commit adultery and live a lie " (23:14). His warning is dire. "The whole land will be laid waste because there is no one who cares" (12:11). - J.D. Wetterling, Oldsmar, Fla.

Choosing leaders

The articles concerning public leaders, both religious and political, are excellent. We are responsible for choosing wise and moral leaders, and it is imperative that we know of and about them. Another way

I had the joy this week of presenting my 9-year-old son with Steve Guschov's article on A.C. Green ("Real NBA rebel," March 21). My son faces the reality of his now-absent father's example, who rejected Christianity and embraced the temptations of the world. My son's simple child-like answer to temptation was never to marry. Mr. Green has offered another option-a relationship with the Lord Jesus. My son saw a living example of the strength of Christ in an unsung hero of a game he loves. - Alynn Robinson, Rowley, Iowa
