Love song in the night

I love the antiphonal dialogue between Tony and Maria in the duets of West Side Story. For me there is nothing more romantic than the back and forth of "Somewhere" or "Tonight." I would like to report a similar midnight encounter with the Lord.

It was 4 a.m. and I had lost all hope of falling asleep again. Then I remembered that the only times I have been successful in recovering sleep at that hour were when I tried to memorize Scripture. In hope I opened the Bible at random and landed at Psalm 32. I memorized verses 5 to 11 before drifting off. I will quote in part:

(Me) "I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity; I said, 'I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,' and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. … You are a hiding place for me; you preserve me from trouble; you surround me with shouts of deliverance (verses 5-7).

(Him) "I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you. Be not like a horse or a mule, without understanding, which must be curbed with bit and bridle, or it will not stay near you" (v.8).

Maybe it was the hour, and maybe it was the Spirit, but it felt very much like a love song to me, in which I sang the first part and God sang the second. I hope you see what I mean as you read it. Can you feel the "romance" in the first verses, in which I love God for being my hiding place and for surrounding me? Can you feel the romance in the antiphonal verses, in which God draws close and replies that He will teach me the way I should go, and counsel me with his eye upon me?

How intimate is His love. How close the whisper of Him:

"… I remember you upon my bed, and meditate on you in the watches of the night" (Psalm 63:6).
