Hugo Chavez, winner of the Oct. 7 presidential election in Venezuela, is scheduled to be sworn in for another term as president on Jan. 10. But the leftist leader underwent his fourth cancer surgery in 18 months in Havana, Cuba, on Dec. 11, raising questions about his ability to serve and succession procedures should he prove unable to hold office.

Memorial for liberty

Religious Freedom Day in the United States, which marks the anniversary of the 1786 passage of the Virginia Statute of Religious Freedom, falls on Jan. 16. The day falls this year as court cases are challenging the administration’s contraception/abortion drug mandate on religious freedom grounds.

Sundance opens

The Sundance Film Festival 2013 begins on Jan. 17 in Park City, Utah. Featured films include jOBS, a biopic about Steve Jobs starring Ashton Kutcher, and the documentary The World According to Dick Cheney.

Inauguration Day

Jan. 21 shares two distinctions this year: It is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and it is the day when President Obama will take the public oath of office to begin his second term. Inauguration events and balls are scheduled to happen throughout the month of January.

Four decades of Roe

The 40th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Roe vs. Wade decision, which forced states to legalize abortion, falls on Jan. 22. The annual March for Life will take place three days later in Washington, D.C.
