Aug. 6

Ten Republican candidates for president likely will appear onstage for the first television debate of the 2016 GOP presidential season. The Fox debate in New Hampshire will allow only the 10 highest-polling candidates to participate. The New Hampshire Union Leader plans to host a candidate forum on Aug. 3, inviting all 16 candidates to take part.

Aug. 7

Alabama, Florida, Iowa, Louisiana, Missouri, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia will all hold sales tax holidays beginning today to help parents purchase school supplies for students. Five other states will hold their sales tax holidays—usually lasting three days—at some other point in August.

Aug. 9

A panoply of churches and civic organizations are planning events in Ferguson, Mo., to mark the one-year anniversary of the shooting death of Michael Brown, which touched off days of rioting and protests against alleged police brutality. Two churches plan to hold workshops and conferences in the St. Louis area in the days leading up to the anniversary.

Aug. 11

PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 fans will be able to simulate the life of a goat today when Coffee Stain Studios releases its Goat Simulator game on Sony platforms. In the third-person action game, users control a goat who may climb on things and head-butt objects. Players earn points for mischief their goats cause.

Aug. 15

The remnants of the British Commonwealth and other Pacific nations today will celebrate the 70th anniversary of Japan’s surrender in World War II. (The United States celebrates V-J Day on Sept. 2, the day of Japan’s formal surrender.) This year, a church in Wellington, New Zealand, will organize more than 100 local couples to re-enact the famous Times Square photograph of an American sailor kissing a nurse at news of the victory.
