Hasan trial

The trial of Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, an Army psychiatrist charged with killing 13 and wounding 32 during a November 2009 shooting at Fort Hood, is set to begin on March 5. Hasan has been charged with 13 counts of premeditated murder, and if he's convicted at the court martial, he could be executed. Experts expect the trial to last two months.

Super Tuesday

With 437 delegates up for grabs in 10 different Republican primary elections, Super Tuesday on March 6 could go a long way toward determining the GOP nominee for the 2012 presidential election. The emergence of Rick Santorum from also-ran to potential front-runner makes 2012's Super Tuesday particularly interesting. The day's big prizes will be Georgia and Ohio.

Space security summit

The European Space Agency will begin two-day meetings on March 7 for its second annual International Security Symposium. What the ESA fears is not stellar threats, but rather terrestrial ones. According to insiders, the summit will focus on the threats posed by hackers committing cyber-warfare.

March Madness Break out

the brackets: The 2012 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament-more commonly known as March Madness-begins March 13 with play-in games in Dayton, Ohio. The round-of-64 action begins two days later on March 15 while the tournament culminates in a championship game scheduled for April 2 in New Orleans.

French presidential deadline

With the April 22 French presidential election looming, incumbent Nicolas Sarkozy has until March 16 to declare his candidacy. Experts say Sarkozy has delayed his formal entrance into the race in order to portray himself as too busy dealing with the financial crisis in the eurozone.

Egyptian parliament seated

On March 17 one half of Egypt's newly elected parliament will convene. Members of the People's Assembly, Egypt's new lower house of parliament, will be sworn in on that day following voting that ends on March 4. The other half of parliament will convene on March 24-more than one year after street protesters forced president Hosni Mubarak to resign.
