Indiana, North Carolina primaries

May 6: Like the Song That Never Ends, the 2008 Democratic primary season just keeps going on and on. And just like supposed clinchers on Super Tuesday, and in Ohio, Texas, and most recently in Pennsylvania, the two early-May primaries won't likely break the deadlock between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.

May 8: One day after his hand-picked successor, Dmitry Medvedev, is sworn in as Russia's newest president, former President Vladimir Putin will likely be sworn in as prime minister. Most analysts expect Putin to carve out a powerful position as head of Russia's dominant political party.

Mother's Day

May 11: What does mom want for Mother's Day? No matter what she wants, she'll probably get a day off from cooking. According to the National Restaurant Association, Mother's Day now ranks as the No. 1 day of the year for restaurant dining in the United States.

60th anniversary of modern Israel

May 14: Don't expect other nations in the Middle East to help Israel blow out the candles at its 60th birthday party. Days after Israel declared its independence from Great Britain in 1948, tens of thousands of Lebanese, Syrian, Iraqi, and Egyptian forces invaded to try to establish the Palestinian state. Israeli forces won the battle, but still face intermittent armed conflict from their Arab neighbors.

Checks mailed

May 16: Taxpayers who have already earmarked the money expected from the federal government's rebate program can expect to have cash in hand soon. The U.S. treasury mails rebate checks on May 16. Married couples that filed jointly and earned less than $150,000 can expect a check for $1,200. Individuals who earned less than $75,000 will receive $600.

Prince Caspian

May 16: Building on the great success of the 2005 film depiction of The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Walden Media and Disney plan to release the next edition of the series based on the C.S. Lewis series on this day. Disney and Walden can only hope Prince Caspian has as much box office success as its predecessor, which raked in nearly $750 million.
