FEMA deadline, kind of

June 1: Those still living in FEMA trailers in Mississippi and Louisiana 33 months after Hurricane Katrina spun a devastating course through the central Gulf Coast have a June 1 deadline to move out of their temporary trailers. But FEMA officials in Washington say the thousands still living in the government-funded trailer parks won't be evicted if they're not out by the deadline. The government agency reports it may extend grace to some residents until March 2009.

Montana and South Dakota primaries

June 3: At long last, the Democratic primary contests end in two states that never figured to matter in either party's nomination process. If Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., hasn't already secured the necessary 2,025 delegates to win the nomination from rival Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., he'll have until Aug. 25 to pick up enough superdelegates to avoid a brokered convention.

9/11 mastermind arraigned

June 5: Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, mastermind of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, could be arraigned in a military court as early as June 5. At the hearing in a courtroom on the grounds of the U.S. military facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Mohammed will enter a formal guilty or not-guilty plea for the attacks that brought down the World Trade Center and damaged the Pentagon in 2001. Last year, The New York Times reported that Mohammed had confessed to the atrocities.

Keynote address at Apple conference

June 9: Whenever Apple founder Steve Jobs takes the podium at Apple's developers convention, rumor-loving Mac fans go a-twitter about what new toy he might be debuting. Official statements from Apple indicate this year's conference will focus on introducing applications for the iPhone. But, of course, Jobs could have other products up his sleeve.

Southern Baptist Convention kicks off

June 10: Baptists will converge on Indianapolis in June for their annual meeting. This year, convention president Frank Page says the Southern Baptists will seek to refocus the denomination on evangelism and soul-winning.

Final round of the U.S. Open

June 15: Stars of the PGA tour will fight it out in the final round of the 2008 U.S. Open at the Torrey Pines Golf Course near San Diego. But more eyes could be on a highly anticipated NBC and Golf Digest gimmick. Last year, Tiger Woods said there wasn't a 10-handicap amateur in America who could break 100 under the harsh U.S. Open conditions. One amateur will get his chance to prove Woods wrong with a broadcast version of the Golf Digest challenge starring one amateur playing in a foursome with celebrity golf junkies Tony Romo (Cowboys quarterback), Justin Timberlake (pop singer), and Matt Lauer (Today show anchor).
