Amelia hits the big screen
October 23: Once a feature of newsreel footage, Amelia Earhart returns to the public eye after disappearing during an around-the-world flight 72 years ago. Now, Hillary Swank will play Earhart in the feature film, Amelia, set to be released today.
Dutch decision
October 26: The Dutch child protection agency, evaluating the physical and mental fitness of 13-year-old Laura Dekker to sail solo around the world, is expected to announce its decision. She had planned to set out on Sept. 1 on her 26-foot yacht in an attempt to break a world record. A Dutch court ruled on Aug. 28 that she is too young and ordered the evaluation. Officials argue that isolation, sleep deprivation, weather hazards, and danger in foreign ports would be too much for a 13-year-old.
King James opens court
October 27: Star forward LeBron James will help Cleveland kick off the NBA season when the Cavaliers host the much-ballyhooed Boston Celtics in the first night of pro basketball games. And while James might have the most current star power on the court, new teammate and future Hall of Famer Shaquille O'Neal could steal some of the limelight in his first game with the Cavs.
Series begins
October 28: One day after the NBA season opens, Major League Baseball will begin determining its champion in the 105th World Series. If the series goes to a game 7, it will end on Nov. 5-the latest ending to a season in MLB history.

Three decades ago, a UCLA student programmer named Charley Kline tried to send the first bit of information on an internet predecessor. But while Kline meant to send the word login to a remote computer, the gin was lost in transmission. The remaining lo was enough to crash the system.
Jefferson sentencing
October 30: Former Louisiana Congressman William Jefferson asked for a new trial, but he won't get one. And it's likely that the next time Jefferson appears in court, the New Orleans Democrat will be slapped with jail time during the sentencing phase of his corruption case. Jefferson could receive more than 200 years in prison.
