Parents of about 90,000 children in Quebec will have to make other plans for child care today. A consortium of private, in-home day care providers announced in June it would hold a one-day strike on July 7 in an effort to force Canada’s government to increase the budget for provincial child care subsidies.
July 8
Pancake lovers, be advised: Cheap stacks of pancakes are to be had on July 8. To celebrate the International House of Pancakes’ 56th birthday, the pancake chain plans to offer a short stack of flapjacks for 56 cents from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. The 56-cent price tag makes the pancakes 4 cents cheaper than when the company first opened its doors in 1958.
July 10
South Dakota residents won’t have to look at all the tall grass anymore. The state’s short-term ban on mowing grass alongside some highways is set to end today. South Dakota hopes the rule helped the state’s pheasant population, since the birds often nest in grassy ditches near the state’s highways. North Dakota has a similar ban that extends until July 15.
July 11
The seventh installment of the Fast and Furious car racing film franchise is due to hit theaters today. The movie will mark the last credit for actor Paul Walker, who died in a car crash while the film was in production. Directors used body doubles of Walker, including his own brothers, to resolve his character’s fate.
July 15
Baseball’s midsummer classic will make its third trip to Minnesota today when All-Star teams from both leagues square off to determine home field advantage in this year’s World Series. Minnesota hosted the exhibition in 1965 and in 1985, but this will be the first time the All-Star Game is played at Target Field.
