Israeli elections
Polls show the coalition of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will win enough seats in the country’s Jan. 22 election for the Likud Party leader to remain in office. But the polls also show Naftali Bennett of the Bayit Yehudi Party, which wants Israel to annex parts of the occupied West Bank, is drawing significant votes away from Netanyahu.
Maha Kumbha Mela
Once every 12 years tens of millions of Hindus gather at the Ganges River in Allahabad, India, for the Maha Kumbha Mela. Hindus bathe in the heavily polluted river during the festival, believing the act will cleanse them of their sins and move them toward nirvana. One of the main holy bathing days at this year’s festival falls on Jan. 27.
NASA launch
The space agency plans to begin a series of unmanned missions on Jan. 29 when it launches an Atlas V rocket carrying a communications satellite called the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite. The satellite will be part of a network that relays communications from the International Space Station and the Hubble Space Telescope, among other satellites.
Super Bowl XLVII
Champions of the American Football Conference and the National Football Conference will meet to decide this season’s NFL champion in Super Bowl XLVII in New Orleans on Feb. 3. CBS will broadcast the event and announced on Jan. 8 that it will air seven hours of pre-game coverage leading up to the 5:30 p.m. kickoff.
Espionage trial
The military trial of Army intelligence analyst Pfc. Bradley Manning begins Feb. 4 at Fort Meade, Md. Manning faces 22 charges that include espionage and aiding the enemy for allegedly leaking hundreds of thousands of classified documents to Wikileaks in 2010. He could receive a life sentence.
