Kosovo's constitution enters into force

June 15: Nearly a decade after the violent conflict between the Albanian majority and the Serb militants, Kosovo will enter into its era of self-rule on June 15 when the constitution takes effect. Over the next several weeks, the switch to home rule will mean the United Nations peacekeeping mission will gradually be replaced by a peacekeeping force operated by the European Union.

The first day same-sex couples in California can legally wed

June 17: The court ruling that struck down California's ban on same-sex marriage last month means that by June 16, gay couples could be heading to the altar. Across the state, authorities are scrambling to establish procedures in order to comply with the court-imposed deadline. In San Diego County, the County Recorder-Assessor has noted that employees licensed to perform wedding ceremonies who object morally to same-sex marriages can choose to abstain from the process.

U.S. Conference of Mayors annual meeting

June 20: If some environmentally minded mayors have their way, the annual meeting of the nation's top city executives won't concern just city issues. A number of mayors from across the country have banded together ahead of the annual U.S. Conference of Mayors meeting to use their combined voices to push for a controversial cap-and-trade system for carbon emissions.

Global Anglican Future Conference

June 22: Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury, may try to downplay it, but he'll certainly be watching the Global Anglican Future Conference with some interest. Conservative church leaders attending GAFCON, which is planned to commence one month prior to the once-a-decade Lambeth 2008 meeting of Anglican bishops, may move closer to a split within the Anglican church.

Opening days of Wimbledon

June 23: Break out the strawberries and cream. The 132nd edition of the Wimbledon tennis championships kicks off in London. If Swiss star Roger Federer can again take home the gentlemen's championship, he'll have won six straight at the All England club-one shy of Willie Renshaw and his idol Pete Sampras' record of seven victories.

Zimbabwe presidential runoff

June 27: After weeks of tension that included accusations and recriminations-as well as an alleged assassination plot-Zimbabweans will finally head back to the polls to conduct a June 27 runoff between incumbent Robert Mugabe and challenger Morgan Tsvangirai. Last month in the first round of voting, Tsvangirai claimed over 50 percent of the vote. But official reports from Mugabe's totalitarian government gave him just over 47 percent, forcing the June runoff.
