Thatcher rising

May 3: Thirty years ago today, Britons punished liberal politicians for the United Kingdom's economic woes in a major parliamentary election that pushed conservative Member of Parliament Margaret Thatcher into 10 Downing Street. She became the U.K.'s first female prime minister and served as parallel to her transatlantic conservative partner, President Ronald Reagan.

Test results

May 4: The president's much-ballyhooed stress test of financial institutions will be released today. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner called for an overarching analysis of the U.S. banking system to discover which banks could survive sans government intervention if the economy worsens. But insiders indicate there will be few surprises when the results are officially released.

Mayoral runoff

May 5: Former NBA player Dave Bing and incumbent Detroit Mayor Ken Cockrel Jr. will compete in a run-off election for what could be considered the hardest job in Michigan. Whoever wins the mayoral run-off to fill the remainder of disgraced and convicted former mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's term will face governing a city still hemorrhaging jobs. According to the Detroit Free-Press, the city's unemployment rate has jumped 6 percent to 22.8 percent since Kilpatrick resigned in September.

Mother's Day

May 10: It's Mother's Day and, according to People magazine, Amy Winehouse might be on the receiving end of a Hallmark Card. The rehab-prone pop singer says she would like to give adoption a try. In 2007, Winehouse was hospitalized for overdosing on a potent mix of alcohol, ecstasy, cocaine, and heroine. According to the gossip magazine, she acknowledged that child-welfare officials might not match her eagerness to adopt.

Graduation exercises

May 13: Take that University of Arizona: While Arizona State University graduates will hear from President Barack Obama during commencement exercises on May 13, rival Wildcat graduates from the University of Arizona will hear from Segway Human Transporter inventor Dean Kamen. The inventor was awarded the National Medal of Technology in 2000-but has not won an Electoral College election.

Angels & Demons opens

May 15: Tom Hanks will reprise his role as the mystery-solving professor Robert Langdon when Angels & Demons hits the big screen. Makers of the religious conspiracy film hope to cash in on the success of Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code, which made more than $750 million in its 2006 film adaptation.
