Hello hurricanes

Hurricane season begins June 1 and some forecasters expect a doozey. Researchers at Colorado State University predict eight hurricanes-half of them major-with a nearly 70 percent chance that one of those big storms makes landfall in the United States.

Spelling bee begins

The Scripps National Spelling Bee kicks off June 2 as 274 spellers converge on Washington, D.C. This year, ABC will broadcast the Championship Finals from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. on June 4. Last year's champion, Kavya Shivashankar, took home the victory after correctly spelling the word Laodicean, which means of or relating to the ancient Roman city Laodicea.

Blago on trial

Jury selection in the corruption trial of Rod Blagojevich begins June 3 after the former Illinois governor seemingly exhausted his celebrity with media and reality television appearances since being impeached for allegedly trying to sell the Senate seat vacated by President Barack Obama. Meanwhile, the judge in the trial has promised to keep jurors' identities secret in order to prevent jury tampering.

Primary day

Amidst a budget crisis threatening to send the state into default, voters in California head to the polls June 8 to select Republican and Democratic candidates for office ahead of the upcoming November election. While former Gov. Jerry Brown seems to have wrapped up the Democratic nomination, the Republican contest between former eBay CEO Meg Whitman and Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner appears to be headed for the wire. Iowa, Maine, Montana, North Dakota, New Jersey, Nevada, South Carolina, South Dakota, and Virginia will also hold primaries on June 8.

Wax on

The 1980s are back in the box office as theaters in coming weeks feature takes on MacGyver and The A-Team. But the '80s fun begins June 11 with a remake of the classic coming-of-age film Karate Kid. Gone are Daniel Larusso and Mr. Miyagi. Instead, Jaden Smith stars as a boy who is uprooted from Detroit to Beijing and learns martial arts from a Chinese resident played by Jackie Chan.
