Primary duels

Alaska and Florida hold primary battles on Aug. 24. But the real showcase will take place in Arizona where 2008 Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain faces a challenge from the right to hold onto his Senate seat. McCain's challenger is former congressman J.D. Hayworth.

Louisiana votes

Elections in Louisiana on Aug. 28 highlight the extent to which disasters dominate Louisiana politics. With the five-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina just a day later, Democratic frontrunner Rep. Charlie Melancon seems like the favorite to win. In part, Melancon owes his position in the spotlight to the geography of the House district he represents: Louisiana's 3rd Congressional District has been beset by both Katrina and this year's oil spill.

Women's Equality Day

Though Women's Equality Day on Aug. 26 recognizes women earning the voting franchise, many feminists use the day to agitate for equal pay for men and women. But, according to a long-term study of University of Chicago MBA graduates, female MBAs with children work 24 percent fewer hours than their male counterparts. And after a decade of work, 40 percent of females have taken six months or more off compared to just 10 percent of men.

Mother Teresa centenary

One hundred years after her birth on Aug. 26, 1910, in what was then the Ottoman Empire (modern day Macedonia), Mother Teresa's bones are still being argued over. Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha has asked that her remains be transported to Albania-the land of her ethnicity. But Indian officials say her body should remain in India, the country where she worked for a lifetime until her death in 1997.

North Korean conclave

For the third time since 1948, delegates of North Korea's ruling party will meet sometime in September. According to press reports out of South Korea and Japan, the delegates are supposedly meeting to decide on a successor for ailing leader Kim Jong-Il. The North Korean dictator suffered a stroke in 2008 and has since been grooming his son, Kim Jong-Un, for leadership of the isolated nation.
