Independence-minded Catalans will test the strength of the movement today when residents of Catalonia cast ballots in a nonbinding vote for independence from Spain. Catalan President Artur Mas sought to make the Nov. 9 date an official vote, but was blocked by unity advocates in Madrid and the nation’s constitutional court. Mas said he would allow an unofficial vote as a way to rally Catalans around the independence movement.

Legendary British rock band Pink Floyd will release its first new studio album in 20 years today. The album, entitled The Endless River, will feature mainly instrumentals, with only one song containing substantial lyrics. The 1973 Pink Floyd album The Dark Side of the Moon has sold more than 45 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling records of all time.

Starbucks will release nationwide its newest seasonal flavor today: chestnut. The coffee giant tested out chestnut praline lattes in a number of markets last year, and the response from customers enticed Starbucks to make the seasonal drink available nationwide this winter.

Struggling mobile phone carrier Sprint will roll out its “iPhone for Life” plan today in a bid to retain existing customers and entice new customers to sign up. Under the plan, customers could lease a new iPhone 6 and receive unlimited talk, text, and data for as little as $80 per month and perpetually upgrade the phone for free every year.

For those who missed Obamacare’s open enrollment period for 2014, open enrollment for 2015 health coverage will begin on HealthCare.gov beginning today. Most of the technical issues with the much-lampooned website have been fixed, but insurance professionals warn that HealthCare.gov still has bugs.
