Russia has set today as a deadline for Ukraine to repay a $3 billion debt or face legal action. If Ukraine fails to pay up, and if Russia follows through on its threat, the default will cut Ukraine off from further aid from the International Monetary Fund.

On Christmas Day, Christians around the world will celebrate the Nativity. In Jesus’ birthplace, Bethlehem, festivities may be muted this year: Because of ongoing violence between Israelis and Palestinians, the Palestinian Authority has asked the town to cancel celebratory fireworks and limit Christmas decorations to two main streets.

Dec. 28

The cities of St. Louis, San Diego, and Oakland, Calif., have until today to make a final offer to the NFL to retain their professional football franchises. NFL owners hope to vote on potential relocation for the three franchises at an owners meeting in Houston on Jan. 12. Many expect the NFL to relocate a franchise to Los Angeles this offseason.

Mobile phone-maker BlackBerry will pull out of Pakistan beginning today after refusing to cooperate with the government’s request to view user data. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority had set a Nov. 30 deadline for the company to turn over access to its data servers. After failing to comply, BlackBerry announced it would cease operating in the country.

Jan. 1

The new year will kick off with a full slate of premier football bowl games, including the Fiesta Bowl, the Rose Bowl, and the Sugar Bowl. The first round of the College Football Playoff will occur on New Year’s Eve in preparation for the Jan. 11 national championship game.
