April 10

In a rare move, the United States Postal Service will actually lower the price of a first-class stamp today to 47 cents from 49 cents. Congress this year refused to extend a price hike initially meant to increase revenue during the Great Recession. The result is the first reduction in stamp prices since 1919, costing the Postal Service about $2 billion per year according to the postmaster general.

April 13

A 14-year battle over Argentina’s unwillingness to repay some sovereign debts could be resolved today when a U.S. appeals court decides whether to lift sanctions on Argentina for failing to pay back private American creditors. Earlier, a New York–based district court placed injunctions on the South American nation after it attempted to solve its credit problems by steadfastly refusing to pay up.

April 16

In celebration of National Park Week, the federal government will waive entrance fees at all 410 national parks in the United States for a week. The promotion begins April 16 and runs through April 24.

April 17

OPEC and other oil-producing nations will meet today to discuss whether to freeze oil production in a bid to boost global oil prices. Doha, Qatar, will host the talks in the midst of a period of critically low oil prices: From June 2014 to February 2016, the price of oil dropped 71 percent.

April 18

Rather than the traditional April 15 deadline, Americans will have until Monday, April 18, to file a federal income tax return with the IRS this year. The short delay springs from the fact that the District of Columbia will celebrate Emancipation Day on April 15. Residents of Maine and Massachusetts will celebrate Patriots’ Day on April 18, shifting their filing deadline to April 19.
