New York Knicks star forward Carmelo Anthony has until today to notify the Knicks that he plans to pick up a contract option and play the 2014–15 season in New York. Otherwise, Anthony will be heading to free agency, making him the summer’s biggest target for NBA teams under the salary cap.

June 24

Veteran GOP Senator Thad Cochran will be in the fight of his political life today as he and challenger Chris McDaniel compete in the Republican primary runoff in Mississippi. Cochran, who has been in the Senate since 1978, lost by a hair’s breadth to the conservative McDaniel on June 3. Neither candidate reached a majority, forcing the runoff (see “Dispatches.” )

July 1

A new anti-spam law goes into effect today in Canada, affecting nearly every Canadian business—and a few American ones too. According to the law, a business may not send emails to customers without implied or express consent from the customer. Individual violators could face fines up to $1 million while corporations face fines up to $10 million.

Former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin today faces a federal judge who will hand down sentencing stemming from his Feb. 12 conviction on 20 counts of fraud, bribery, and money laundering in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Nagin’s corruption convictions could net him 20 years in federal prison.

July 4

Octogenarian rock ’n’ roll icon Frankie Valli will headline the “Capitol Fourth” Independence Day celebration on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The evening program, which features the former Four Seasons frontman as well as fireworks, is expected to draw hundreds of thousands of spectators.
