August 18

Many other states took their turn earlier in August, but Connecticut will have the last back-to-school sales tax holiday from Aug. 18-24. The practice is popular in Southern states in early August to coincide with earlier school year start dates. By the time Connecticut’s sale ends, most of the rest of the nation’s students will be back to school.

August 20

Tonight’s full moon represents the third full moon of the summer season. Most people understand Blue Moons to be a second full moon of a calendar month. But the third full moon of a season with four also goes by the moniker. Not to say tonight’s moon will have a bluish hue: That phenomenon is caused by atmospheric disturbances.

August 21

Lawyers for the debt-riddled city of Detroit come before a federal bankruptcy judge today for their next step in taking the city into Chapter 9 protection. Though state-appointed emergency manager Kevyn Orr insists bankruptcy is the only way for the city to navigate its debt crisis, pensioners have objected loudly, challenging the bankruptcy in court.

August 28

A program designed to draw the Jewish diaspora in Ethiopa back to Israel will end today. Since 2010, Ethiopians who could prove they had Jewish ancestors could immigrate to Israel in a special immigration system separate from the country’s normal practice. Under the aliya, more than 6,500 Ethiopians have relocated to Israel.

August 30

Employees at the Internal Revenue Service are set to take a four-day weekend starting Friday whether they like it or not. As a consequence of the sequester, the IRS scheduled five furlough days in 2013. Due to cost cutting, the tax agency was able to cancel the scheduled late July furlough. But the day off without pay for Aug. 30 is expected to happen.
