Sept. 7

The 34th America’s Cup international sailing race will launch today. The two-week contest will include 17 matches held in the waters near San Francisco. The city’s Golden Gate Yacht Club will defend its title after its Oracle Team USA won the America’s Cup in 2010. This year, the race will dispense with yachts and feature catamarans that can reach speeds of 40 knots.

Sept. 8

The modified Lotus Esprit submarine car (pictured above) in the 1977 movie The Spy Who Loved Me will hit the auction block today during a sale of collector cars in London. The car is expected to fetch $800,000—far less than other vintage racers—but still be the talk of the event. After being lost in the decade after the movie’s premier, the car was discovered in an abandoned storage unit.

Sept. 10

By the conclusion of the International Olympic Committee meetings today in Buenos Aires, the host city for the 2020 Summer Games should be announced. Finalists to host the XXXII Olympiad include Madrid, Istanbul, and Tokyo. All three cities are expected to send emissaries to Argentina for the meeting to make one last sales pitch.

Sept. 10

The International Criminal Court will today begin the trials of Kenyan Deputy President William Ruto and media personality Joshua arap Sang for crimes against humanity. The charges stem from violence in Kenya after a presidential election in 2007. The ICC prosecutor says Ruto and Sang are responsible for rioting that claimed the lives of up to 1,500 Kenyans.

Sept. 13

Russian President Vladimir Putin meets with the newly installed President of Iran, Hassan Rouhani, today at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit. The meeting will give Rouhani the opportunity to win the support of a powerful ally as Tehran attempts to navigate international opposition to its continuing nuclear program.
