Christmas in Egypt

Egyptian Coptic Christians celebrate Christmas on Jan. 7. They have been suffering increasing attacks from Muslims since the fall of the three-decade-long regime of former President Hosni Mubarak.

New addresses

ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, on Jan. 12 will begin accepting applications for new "generic top level domains," also known as internet address endings. ICANN will stop accepting applications on April 12. The 22 address endings now include the familiar .com, and ICANN hasn't set a limit on the number of new endings.

Religious Freedom Day

Jan. 16, Religious Freedom Day in the United States, marks the anniversary of the passage of the Virginia Statute of Religious Freedom. Drafted by Thomas Jefferson, the statute rejected plans to set up government funding for churches.

Sundance Festival

Robert Redford's Sundance Film Festival opens in Park City, Utah, on Jan. 19. The festival features 200 films out of more than 9,000 submissions and gives unknown filmmakers an opportunity to boost their films.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day

The Jan. 19 holiday honors the slain civil rights leader. Outside the United States, the Canadian city of Toronto and the Japanese city of Hiroshima observe the holiday.
