Indian protest march

Beginning on Sept. 2, perhaps as many as 100,000 poor, dispossessed Indians will begin a four-week, 170-mile march to New Delhi to support legally protected property rights for rural farmers who have been made landless under India's corrupt system. Activist group Ekta Parishad has organized the March for Justice.

Labor Day

Americans celebrate Labor Day on Sept. 3 at a time when the labor movement seems to be in serious peril. Since 1954, the percentage of Americans represented by labor unions has steadily fallen. Today, just 12 percent of American workers belong to a union, and only 7 percent of private-sector workers.

Pastor in court

After being held prisoner for more than 1,000 days, Iranian pastor Youcef Nadarkhani has been ordered to appear in Iranian court on Sept. 8. Held prisoner since 2009, the Iranian pastor was convicted of apostasy-converting from Islam to Christianity. While Amnesty International and other supporters hope his court date will lead to his release, Nadarkhani faces possible execution.

UN council meets

At the 21st session of the United Nations Human Rights Council on Sept. 10, officials will try to draft language declaring a "Human Right to Peace." In June, Cuba proposed creating such a human right and the oft-maligned Human Rights Council agreed. Some in the democratic West worry that language preferred by other countries would justify terror attacks against nations engaged in "foreign occupation."

Pope goes to Lebanon

Pope Benedict XVI will land in Lebanon on Sept. 14 to kick off a three-day tour of the largely Muslim nation. The 85-year-old pope has expressed concerns about the plight of Christians who live in the Muslim-dominated Middle East. At the end of the weekend trip, Benedict will conduct Mass in Beirut.
