Listen before leaping

No sooner had the Lord settled the Israelites each in their own allotted tribal lands than the first internecine fight broke out. Almost. The two and a half tribes that had taken territory on the east side of the Jordan erected an imposing altar. When the tribes on the West side heard about it they gathered together and prepared for war. (The law of Moses had expressly forbidden the formal worship of God at any except the designated place.)

Fortunately, before running the brothers through with swords, the West-siders stopped a minute to explain to them why they were about to kill them:

"What is this breach of faith that you have committed against the God of Israel in turning away this day from following the Lord by building yourselves an altar this day in rebellion against the Lord? Have we not had enough of the sin at Peor from which even yet we have not cleansed ourselves, and for which there came a plague upon the congregation of the Lord, that you too must turn away this day from following the Lord…."

It turns out the East-siders had a perfectly good explanation, and bloodshed was averted: The replica altar they had built was not for burnt offerings but as a witness to remind all Israelites in future generations that though located on the other side of the Jordan, they were just as much a part of Israel as their West-side brothers.

All of which tells me that it's good to have zeal for the Lord --- but it's also good to talk to the brothers first before you jump all over them with swords. They might have some perspective you hadn't thought of.
