- Don't waste your time -- Maybe --- Worth seeing ---- Excellent ----- Masterpiece
The Truman Show ----
Now in video stores Paramount; rated PG (thematic elements, mild language) Cast: Jim Carrey, Ed Harris Story: Jim Carrey plays a man adopted before his birth by a production company and unknowingly living his life inside a giant domed set, his every move broadcast via satellite to the world. Critique: "This is the best mass-market conversation starter since Schindler's List." A film with substance (can man play God?) that doesn't become heavy-handed. Reviewed in WORLD: June 20, 1998
Mulan -
Now in video stores Disney animation; rated G Cast: Voices of Lea Salonga, Eddie Murphy Story: Chinese legend about a teenage girl who dresses as a man to take her sick father's place in the army. Critique: "It's awful. It should do for the Chinese what Pocahontas did for Native Americans." Reviewed in WORLD: March 14, 1998
Antz --
Now in video stores DreamWorks SKG; rated PG (mild language, menacing action) Cast: Voices by Woody Allen, Sylvester Stallone, Sharon Stone Story: A worker ant challenges the social structure of the colony when he falls in love with the princess. Critique: "As fantasy, it's cute fun. As allegory, it's buggy." Kids will like the graphics, but the worldview is liberal. Reviewed in WORLD: Oct. 17, 1998
Ever After ---
Due in video stores: March 2 Twentieth Century Fox; rated PG-13 (scenes of jeopardy) Cast: Drew Barrymore, Anjelica Houston, Dougray Scott Story: Descendants of Cinderella and the Prince tell the "real" story behind the fairy tale. Critique: A fun retelling of the tale, with a feisty (but not overbearing) princess. "Never takes itself too seriously." Reviewed in WORLD: Aug. 15, 1998
What Dreams May Come --
Due in video stores: March 9 Polygram; rated PG-13 (death, disturbing images, language) Cast: Robin Williams, Annabella Sciorra, Max van Sydow Story: Husband crosses from "heaven" to "hell" (both self-created by those who inhabit them) to rescue his wife. Critique: A technically skillful film, but "the New Age turns out to be simple legalism, after all." This film about the afterlife offers no mediator, no grace, no forgiveness. Reviewed in WORLD: Oct. 17, 1998
Bulworth -
Due in video stores: March 16 Fox; rated R (profanity) Cast: Warren Beatty, Halle Berry, Don Cheadle Story: Warren Beatty plays a corrupt Reagan Democrat senator who flips out on the campaign trail. Critique: Mr. Beatty's second attempt to mass market Marxism; political correctness abounds to absurdity. "Obviously, this film is awful." Reviewed in WORLD: May 23, 1998
