Joe Paterno and Jim Tressel are forced out after scandals

College football witnessed the sudden firing of two of its most successful active coaches-Joe Paterno at Penn State and Jim Tressel (inset) at Ohio State-who lost their jobs amid scandal over something each left undone rather than something they did. Tressel failed to report knowledge of his players receiving inappropriate gifts and money for their athletic performance. Paterno failed to take action on allegations of pedophilia against a member of his coaching staff. Penn State trustees fired him mid-season in November, along with university president Graham Spanier, after authorities arrested former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky, who faces criminal accusations from 10 young men who claim he molested them on school property, in his home, and elsewhere.
