Kingdom work

KANSAS CITY---We had watched the Royals win a close, extra-inning game in Cincinnati last Friday night, and on Tuesday night they had batting practice against some inept Houston pitchers, knocking out 20 hits on the way to a 12-3 victory. From our eyewitness observation, Kansas City is the best team in the major leagues. (In reality, they are struggling to avoid last place.)

Again, the WORLD readers we met were impressive. I could mention lots of people, but I'll just mention one couple, David and Ellie Lee. David is a medical oncologist, aka a cancer doctor. He has been in practice since 1988, going solo for 16 years, now with a partner and a partner-to-be, but not knowing whether the Obamacare future will make things difficult.

It seems that his job is 10 percent medicine and 90 percent counseling. As Ellie explained, her husband's opportunity to go through very tough situations with people allows him to ask about their spiritual history---and often God gives him the chance to talk with them about his faith and to encourage them to re-explore their own. He's been able to point people, some at the end of their lives, back to a relationship with God.

David and Ellie have two teenage children, so Ellie spends a lot of time in mom work---but she is also a teaching director for Community Bible Study and has had a class of 175 women and 95 kids for the past six years. She has been encouraged to see that women from all levels of Bible knowledge come together and study Scripture and enrich their lives.

At every ballpark we meet extraordinary people who read and value WORLD. It's a great privilege to be able to write and edit for them.
