Is it time for Texas Christian University to change its name?

When I wrote about Texas Christian University (TCU) for WORLD in 2013, I wondered why a Christian institution would have an “interfaith initiative” in which students “across faith traditions came together to celebrate our individual beliefs, learn about one another, and work together to change the world.” How exactly do Christians go about celebrating someone’s belief in a false god?

But TCU hasn’t been a religious school for some time, and that’s the real issue. TCU is not like Wheaton College or Biola University. Think Duke University or Southern Methodist University, which both began as Christian institutions. They’re now secular, private universities. TCU may call itself a “theological” institution and have some ties with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), which has “Presbyterian and Baptist roots,” but that’s as close as it comes to being a Christian school.

To avoid confusion, why not replace “Christian” in the school’s name to something like “Community” or “Carnal”? That way, school officials wouldn’t have to change the initials. Or drop the name altogether and go with the initialism “TCU,” much like KFC or IBM or LGBTQ. It would help clarify the school’s worldview whenever it does something like offer students college credit for working for an organization that vacuums and scrapes unborn babies from their mothers’ wombs in the name of “reproductive justice.”

Students for Life of America reported on Monday that TCU will offer college credit to a student interning at the country’s largest abortion provider, Planned Parenthood. The school’s history department sent out an email about a project to highlight the 80-year-plus history of Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas. If a TCU student scores the internship or “volunteer opportunity,” perhaps she should mention the Center for Medical Progress’ undercover video series. Planned Parenthood abortionists were recorded discussing the sale of aborted-baby body parts.

Would Planned Parenthood even select a student from a school with the word “Christian” in its name?

TCU is certainly focused on a different mission than teaching biblical values or protecting the unborn. The school “strives to provide diverse learning opportunities for students to effectively prepare them for the global community,” a spokesman wrote in an email to The Blaze in response to questions about the internship. “Diverse learning opportunities” at an organization that slaughters the unborn. How global of TCU, which also states that it doesn’t “support political or personal statements associated with any” internships.

TCU could take a stand against the abortion industry. It could choose to decline to share “opportunities” for students at places that promote death. But it probably won’t. It’s easier to go along with secularism and hasten the decline. Fortunately, we can rely on a sovereign God. If a Bible-believing TCU student is selected for the internship, perhaps she can smuggle in the gospel and save some precious unborn lives.
