Retired
After 19 seasons, San Antonio Spurs power forward Tim Duncan, 40, announced his retirement July 11. The No. 1 overall pick in 1997, Duncan never missed the playoffs, winning five titles with coach Gregg Popovich. In an era when few players stay in one place long, Duncan gained a reputation as the ultimate teammate. “The Big Fundamental,” as he was known, said playing wasn’t as fun anymore. The 15-time All-Star and two-time MVP has two children and an automobile business.
Admitted
A left-wing German activist raped in January admits that she lied about the ethnicity of her attackers, afraid of encouraging racism. Selin Gören, 24, told her story in July to Germany’s Spiegel magazine. Gören, an activist for refugees, said three men attacked her at a Mannheim playground. She immediately went to the police, but told authorities the men spoke German, rather than Arabic and Farsi. She cited fears of causing “more hatred against migrants in Germany.” Germany controversially welcomed more than 1 million migrants in 2015, mostly from the Middle East and North Africa, and has since seen a surge in sexual assaults by migrants. Gören says she later told police the truth.
Died
A young migrant from Afghanistan armed with an ax on July 18 attacked passengers on a train in southern Germany, wounding five people, including four tourists from Hong Kong. Police shot him dead as he fled. Witnesses say the attacker, 17, shouted “Allahu Akbar” during the attack near Würzburg, Bavaria. ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack and released a video of what it said was the young man stating that ISIS fighters had settled throughout the world and would carry out more attacks “in your villages, in your cities, in your airports, in your streets.”
Arrested
Police in Idaho Falls arrested Sean Patrick Smith July 11 for allegedly taking pictures of a woman in a Target fitting room. Smith, 43, goes by Shauna and identifies as transgender. Police in the Idaho town charged Smith with voyeurism for using a cell phone to capture images of an 18-year-old trying on swimwear. Smith told authorities this wasn’t his first video, which he said he makes for the “same reason men go online to look at pornography.” Target has been the subject of a boycott since the retailer announced in April that customers may use facilities that fit any concept of gender.
Found
A 9-year-old girl discovered a newborn July 11 while playing in her Indiana yard. Elysia Laub of Lowell, Ind., called her mother, and the pair found an infant girl with placenta and umbilical cord attached. Heidi Laub said the baby was sunburned and the afterbirth had maggots. Calling Elysia a “guardian angel,” Lake County Sheriff John Buncich said the baby had been abandoned for up to a day, but should recover. The child will go to a foster home.
