CONFIRMING: The Episcopal Church is set to ordain on May 15 Mary Glasspool, a partnered lesbian who will become the first openly gay bishop since New Hampshire divided the church by electing Gene Robinson in 2003. Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, considered the spiritual leader of the worldwide Anglican Communion, said Glasspool's election is "regrettable" and warned it will have "important implications" for the unity of the Communion.

FREED: Vietnam has released Catholic human-rights activist Father Nguyen Van Ly, 63, so that he can receive medical treatment for a brain tumor. Nguyen, who suffered two strokes last year that left him partially paralyzed, has spent more than 15 years in prison since 1977 and was in the midst of serving an eight-year sentence for disseminating anti-government propaganda.

CHARGED: A 46-year-old Pennsylvania woman pleaded not guilty March 18 to charges of conspiring with Islamic terrorists to kill a Swedish cartoonist who portrayed the Muslim prophet Muhammad as a dog. Colleen LaRose, who called herself "Jihad Jane" and boasted that her Caucasian ethnicity would enable her to travel anywhere undetected, flew to Sweden last August in an alleged attempt to carry out the mission. Her trial date is set for May 3.

TESTIFIED: Oprah Winfrey is expected to testify at an upcoming trial and defend comments she made about the former headmistress of Winfrey's South African girls' school amid allegations in 2007 that a dorm matron abused several schoolgirls. At the time, Winfrey said she had "lost confidence" in headmistress Nomvuyo Mzamane and was "cleaning house from top to bottom." Mzamane, who is suing the talk show host for defamation, contends that Winfrey's comments adversely impacted her ability to find other employment.

DIED: Photographer Charles Moore, who captured searing images of the civil-rights movement, including the 1958 arrest of Martin Luther King Jr. and police dogs attacking peaceful demonstrators in Birmingham, Ala., in 1963, died March 11 at the age of 79. Moore's photographs appeared extensively in Life magazine and are credited with helping to sway public opinion in favor of civil-rights legislation.

DIED: Michael Foot, a leftist Labour Party leader, died March 3 at age 96. He supported just about everything conservatives opposed, and opposed just about everything conservatives supported, but conservatives have this to thank him for: His political judgment was so dodgy (as the Brits would say) that when he was the leader of the House of Commons in the late '70s he all but ruined the Labour Party and the British economy with government giveaways to trade unions. The result was scandal and economic collapse-and the election of Margaret Thatcher.
