Survived

Charles "Dale" Ostrander, 12, is making a miraculous recovery after a rip tide along the Washington coast sucked him underwater for approximately 20 minutes. During the ordeal Ostrander's youth group friends, at the beach for a church outing, dropped to the sand to pray. When rescuers pulled him from the water, Ostrander was unconscious and not breathing but doctors now say his full recovery is possible.

Arrested

The FBI arrested an Australian man who fled to Kentucky after allegedly strapping a fake bomb onto the neck of 18-year-old Madeleine Pulver, the daughter of an affluent technology company CEO. Paul Douglas Peters, 50, who according to court papers formerly worked for a company with ties to the victim's family, is awaiting extradition back to Australia. The motive for the Aug. 3 incident remains unclear.

Dismissed

A New York state supreme court judge dismissed the case against former IMF head Dominique Strauss-Kahn on Aug. 23, citing the unreliability of the accuser, a hotel housekeeper, in a dramatic three-month sexual assault case filed against the high-profile French official.

Honest

Minnesota father Pat Smith says honesty is still the best policy, though it may cost his 11-year-old twin boys $50,000. His son Nick's name was drawn in a charity raffle for a chance to win the prize money by hitting a hockey puck into an inches-wide hole 89 feet away. But when it came time for him to make the shot, Nick was outside, so his twin Nate took the shot-and to everyone's shock, sunk the puck. The family didn't tell event organizers about the switch until the next day: "You've got to do what's right," Pat Smith said. "You don't want to teach kids to lie no matter how much money is involved." No word on whether the boys will get to keep the prize.

Died

Albert Brown, the oldest living survivor of the Bataan Death March, died Aug. 14 at age 105. After the end of the war, it took Brown two years to recover fully from the toll of making the 65-mile trek from Bataan and spending three years in a Japanese labor camp during World War II. At the time, Brown's doctor had advised him to enjoy the next few years because he didn't believe Brown would live past 50.

Died

French Resistance heroine Nancy Wake, who during World War II helped Allied soldiers and Jews escape occupied France, died Aug. 7 at age 98. Dubbed "The White Mouse" for her ability to elude the Nazis, she was trained by British intelligence and later parachuted into France to help with preparations for D-Day.

Died

Florida megachurch pastor Zachery Tims died Aug. 12 at age 42. According to a law enforcement official, a white powdery substance believed to be narcotics was discovered with the body. Tims, a former drug addict, founded New Destiny Christian Center in Orlando.
