Died

Former Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres, 93, died on Sept. 28 in a hospital near Tel Aviv. Born in Poland, Peres was part of the founding generation of Israel and held numerous senior offices throughout his career. In the 1960s, he negotiated a historic arms deal with France, and he helped Israel acquire nuclear weapons. As foreign minister in 1993 he negotiated the Oslo Accords, which proved to be a fragile and temporary peace with the PLO. He twice served as Israel’s prime minister.

Enrolled

Nine-year-old Will Maillis graduated from high school this year and enrolled full time in the Community College of Allegheny County, Pa. Maillis’ father said his son showed unusual intelligence early. He was speaking sentences at 7 months, adding and multiplying by 2, and learning Chinese by 5. Maillis is currently getting top grades in his college classes, and his teachers say he keeps up easily. Maillis, who has been accepted to Carnegie Mellon for next year, hopes to become an astrophysicist.

Hailed

The media are hailing Renita Smith, a Prince George’s County, Md., school bus driver, as a hero after she saved the children on her school bus from fire on Sept. 19. When the bus suddenly burst into flames, Smith unbuckled her seat belt, opened the door, and all alone ushered 20 children off the burning bus. Smith then ducked back into the fire to make sure she hadn’t missed anyone. Every child escaped without injury. Smith said she isn’t a hero, but that she has two children herself and acted out of maternal instincts. The county has not revealed what started the fire.

Indoctrinated

The United States Navy last month mandated all sailors, from the rank-and-file to senior officers, to undergo training in the service’s new transgender policies. The Navy will begin to recruit transgender personnel on July 1, 2017. The training seminars, which include telling sailors what to say and believe about certain actions, could lead to violations of religious beliefs. Problems already have arisen. Navy chaplain Wes Modder faced potentially career-ending discipline after he voiced his beliefs on homosexual activity during a counseling session with sailors. He was later exonerated, but with the new mandated training liberal beliefs on transgender issues become Navy policy and could incur harsher discipline for dissenters.

Found

Archaeologists have recovered a Nazi time capsule dating back to 1934 and hidden under a Nazi training center based in a portion of Poland that belonged to Germany until the partition of the country after World War II. The archaeologists knew for years that the capsule existed but couldn’t reach it until now. To reach the capsule they had to make their way through concrete, groundwater, and German mines. It contained undamaged newspapers, photographs, coins, and two copies of Hitler’s Mein Kampf.
