Sentenced
A court in the United Kingdom on Sept. 6 sentenced Anjem Choudary, a famous Islamist activist, to five years and six months in prison for soliciting support for the Islamic State, or ISIS. Choudary was found guilty of using his speeches and online presence to praise ISIS as well as publicly endorse its legitimacy as the Islamic caliphate. Supporting ISIS is a crime in the United Kingdom, and British officials said they had been trying to catch him for years. His followers screamed “Allahu Akbar” as authorities led him to prison.
Overheated
Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton had to leave a Sept. 11 event marking the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks because, aides say, she was feeling “overheated.” She then collapsed as aides attempted to help her into a van, an incident bystanders captured on video. The Clinton campaign later revealed that doctors had diagnosed Clinton with pneumonia earlier in the month and that she was taking antibiotics. The incident intensified calls for the campaign to release Clinton’s health records.
Published
Scribner publishing house announced that it will release new material by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The publisher will compile the stories, many of them previously accepted but not printed, into a book titled I’d Die for You. In some cases, the subject matter of the stories was the barrier to them being published during Fitzgerald’s lifetime. According to Scribner’s statement, the actions of the stories’ heroes were too controversial and unfiltered for the 1930s. I’d Die for You will be coming out in April 2017.
Granted
The United States on Aug. 30 granted asylum to Pastor Dmitry Shestakov and his family, a wife and three daughters. The Shestakovs fled from Uzbekistan after he spent four years in a labor camp for his Christian faith. Even after his release, the government kept him under close surveillance, forcing him to write for permission to leave his home. He received multiple death threats. After two years of this, the Shestakovs fled and arrived in Miami late this August. A mission group helped them gain official status as asylum seekers.
Investigated
Child-welfare officials are investigating Anthony Weiner in the face of a recent sexting scandal after the media discovered a lewd selfie he posted showing his young son lying near him in bed. Officials are inquiring into his treatment of his 4-year-old son, Jordan, at the insistence of New York state Sen. Ruben Diaz, a Democrat. Weiner, a former Democratic congressman, has been involved in two past sexting scandals, and his wife, Clinton campaign aide Huma Abedin, left him after his latest debacle.
