There is a painting hanging in my bedroom that was painted by a good friend of mine just for me. He said that he was thinking of me while he worked on it, and that with each brush stroke and choice of color from the palette he considered the effect that the dot of pigment would have on me.

And because he is a good friend of mine, and because I know these things about the painting, I often stop to look at it while making the bed. It makes a difference. I examine a new little portion of the canvass each time---one morning the variegated greens of the foliage, another morning the pastel French villa, the next day the white gazebo in the background or the picnickers in the foreground or the parasols of the ladies in their long summer dresses or the sun-splotched lawn.

I study the postures of the couple to the right of the main action and wonder what David was thinking when he drew them in. I also wonder what they are talking about.

And then it dawns on me. When God created Provence and Alsace and Auvergne, and the trees outside my window, he had me in mind and was calculating their effect on me: What will she think of the pink pointillism of the flowering dogwood when I bring it back in April? Surely she will love me now.

There was a time when science sprung from desire; they wished to know the One who serenades us with his wonders. "You are clothed with splendor and majesty, covering yourself with light as with a garment" (Psalm 104:1-2).
