Bimenyimana Manasse, a witness to the Rwandan genocide, sits in the church at Mungonero, Rwanda, where up to 2,000 Tutsis took refuge in 1994. In a letter to the senior pastor on April 15 that year they wrote, "We wish to inform you that we have heard that tomorrow we'll be killed with our families." The pastor did not intervene, and on the morning of April 16 the killing by Hutu militias using guns and machetes began. "The massacre lasted all day," said a survivor who lived by burying himself beneath dead bodies. "Around eight or nine o'clock they fired tear gas so that those still alive would cry and so reveal where they were and so the killers could complete their work."
