It was Paul Revere's innovative idea to use the Old North Church in Boston as a signal tower alerting the countryside on April 18, 1775, that the British were coming. Although the church has long since retired lanterns like the two church sexton Robert Newman lit in the steeple, Revere would likely be pleased with the church's latest updates to its lighting system. The old-fashioned incandescent lights that illuminated the church's ceiling vaults were replaced with energy-efficient LEDs, and two years ago the church began using compact fluorescents to light the steeple. Also known as Christ Church in the City of Boston, the Old North Church is an active Episcopal congregation.
