Holy Assumption Orthodox Church in Kenai, Alaska, a National Historic Landmark on the east shore of Cook Inlet, 165 miles southwest of Anchorage. The church was built in the 1890s and replaced an earlier chapel, built in 1841 by representatives of the Russian-American Company, a state-sponsored Russian trade firm that held a monopoly over all trade in Alaska and the Aleutian Islands beginning in 1799.
