To get to Zapote requires crossing four riverbeds, preferably in a four-wheel drive vehicle. If the rains come to swell the rivers, no one gets out. Zapote also sits at the base of the Fuego Volcano, an active volcano that provides an ominous but beautiful backdrop to the village, where most people work for sugar cane or coffee growers, surviving on $5 a day or less. Galilea is the daughter church of a Christian and Missionary Alliance church in San Lucas, two and a half hours away.
