Hoosier daddy?

In a key test of conservative strength within the GOP, Rep. Mark Souder easily defeated former Ft. Wayne Mayor Paul Helmke in Indiana's May 7 primary. As reported in WORLD, Mr. Helmke was campaigning against Mr. Souder from the left, claiming that the four-term congressman was too "extreme" for the people of northeast Indiana. If so, there are a lot of extremists in the district: Mr. Souder garnered 59 percent of the vote, compared to 37 percent for Mr. Helmke. A late endorsement by President Bush helped turn out GOP loyalists for the incumbent, while Mr. Helmke's hoped-for flood of crossover voters never really materialized.
