Lucy and the Saturday Surprise

Melissa Kruger
(Crossway 2023)

Kruger addresses the concept of contentment in this relatable story parents can use to teach children about the dangers of envy. After Lucy’s special chocolate treat melts before she can eat it, her disappointment turns to covetousness when she sees her brother enjoying his intact lollipop. As her discontent festers, Lucy makes a choice that leaves her feeling worse, but wise counsel from her father and forgiveness from her brother lead to restored relationships and freedom from guilt. In the story’s plot and in her note to parents, Kruger discusses the pattern of envy (see, covet, take, hide) and how to combat it with thankfulness to God. Ages 3-7

Count Yourself Calm

Eliza Huie
(The Good Book Company 2023)

In this colorful picture book illustrated by Mike Henson, clinical counselor Eliza Huie provides a framework to help children process their sad, angry, or anxious feelings in a God-honoring way. Building off of a common calming practice, Huie modifies it to point children to God and His promises. The process begins with a prayer and then counts down from five by naming things that bring joy, supply peace, provide encouragement, give hope, and describe God. The book can serve as a helpful resource for parents as they teach their children to cast all of their cares on Jesus, who can calm their tumultuous feelings and help them conquer the struggles of the heart. Ages 4-7

The World God Made

Hannah Anderson
(B&H 2023)

Anderson uses Psalm 104 as the basis for this picture book that showcases the beauty and vastness of God’s creation: “This world has wonders large and small; our God’s the one who made them all. And everywhere you look around, both good and glory can be found.” Nathan Anderson’s soft watercolor-and-ink illustrations frame the lyrical lines, which subtly address questions and concerns children may have about the world. The faith-filled stanzas point readers to Biblical truths while reminding them that God is engaged with and watching over His creation, so they can confidently venture out and explore the natural world. Ages 3-8

Jesus and the Gift of Friendship

Trillia Newbell
(Crossway 2023)

When Zeke’s family moves, he leaves behind his best friend Sam. In his new neighborhood, Zeke is disheartened because he is having a hard time finding a new friend. His mom encourages him to remember that Jesus is already his friend and suggests they pray for Jesus to provide a new (earthly) friend. She reminds him that “Jesus doesn’t always give us what we want but we can always ask. He will give us what we need.” Eventually Zeke’s persistent prayers are answered, and Zeke discovers the blessing of having friends of all different kinds. Kristen and Kevin Howdeshell’s vibrant illustrations pair well with Newbell’s message. Ages 4-7
